The Sapienza University of Rome’s academic structure is based on 11 Faculties comprising over 60 premier academic and research Departments. The Department of Molecular Medicine currently includes 63 teachers flanked by research fellows, fellows, graduate students, graduate students and trainees, with cultural and interdisciplinary technological expertise in emerging areas of biomedicine, such as molecular medicine, nano-medical biotechnology, bioethics and medical history. Common denominator is the integration between basic and translational research, aimed at understanding and identifying the molecular mechanisms underlying the genetic, infectious, chronic-degenerative diseases, immunopathies and tissue/organ-regeneration, in order to develop new targeted diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic tools. There are many research lines ranging from regenerative medicine, oncology and host immune response inflammation.
Cardiac regeneration vs, remodelling represents one of the main research fields currently addressed in Cardiology. Low-radiation induced heart toxicity needs to explore this task, which may potentially provide strategic diagnostic and therapeutic solutions

The National Institute of Health (ISS) is the leading Italian institute for scientific-technical research, control and advice of the Italian National Health Service. ISS is the public advisory body of the Ministry of Health for radiation protection regulation, it is in charge for technical and scientific advices to the state, and regions on aspects related to the risk of ionizing radiation, medical field included. In the Technology and Health (TESA) Department consolidated expertise in radiation research exists in radiation protection, radiation dosimetry, radiation biology and biophysics, epidemiology and modelling. ISS has been involved in patient and worker radiation protection in medical field and has expertise in the development of guidelines on general issues or special techniques in radiological sciences, in collaboration with regulatory accreditation bodies and Scientific Societies.
